Solar incentives and tax credits

With the federal homeowner credit gone, state and utility programs matter more than ever. Here's what's available in each state as of October 2026.

The 30% federal credit ended for buyers. Systems you own that were installed after December 31, 2025 get no federal credit. Leases and PPAs: the provider can claim a business credit, not you. What changed.

Is the federal solar tax credit still available in 2026?

Not for homeowners who buy a system. The 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Lease and PPA companies can still claim a business credit (Section 48E) for a limited time.

What solar incentives are left?

State tax credits in a few states, utility and state rebates, SREC and performance payments in some Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, property and sales tax exemptions in many states, and battery programs in places like California and New England.

Do I need tax liability to use a state solar tax credit?

Usually yes. Tax credits reduce taxes you owe; some can be carried forward to later years. Check the program's rules and talk to a tax professional.
