Cancel a solar contract
Changed your mind? Most home sales come with a cancellation window. Here's your deadline and a letter to send.
Your deadline
3 business days
from signing, for most sales made at your home. Seniors (65+): 5 business days. Contracts must be in the language of negotiation. DFPI oversees PACE and consumer lending (CCFPL).
This is general information, not legal advice. If you're past the deadline, you may still have rights, especially if the sale was misleading; contact your state attorney general.
Your cancellation letter
October 21, 2026 [Company name] [Company address] Re: Notice of cancellation I am cancelling the solar contract I signed on [date signed] for the property at [your address]. This notice is sent within the cancellation period provided by the Federal Trade Commission's Cooling-Off Rule (16 CFR Part 429) and applicable California law. Please confirm the cancellation in writing, return any payments or deposits within 10 business days as the law requires, and do not begin or continue any work, file any permit or interconnection application, or submit any financing documents on my behalf. If any equipment was delivered, tell me within 10 business days whether you will pick it up. Sincerely, [Your name] [Your address]
How to send it
- Send it by certified mail with return receipt, postmarked before the deadline, to the address in the contract's cancellation notice.
- Also email it, and keep copies of everything, including the envelope receipt.
- Sign and send the cancellation form attached to your contract too, if there is one.
- If the company ignores you, report it to the FTC and your state attorney general.
Act fast
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule gives you 3 business days to cancel most sales made at your home for more than $25, and some states give more. Send written notice before the deadline, by a method you can prove.
Questions
Can I cancel a solar contract after 3 days?
Sometimes. Some states allow longer, contracts may give more time, and misleading sales practices can give you other rights. Contact your state attorney general.
